Pomegranate Juice And A Handful Of Raw Dates Against Heart Attack And High LDL Cholesterol

A recent study highlights the benefits of consuming pomegranate juice and raw dates in preventing heart attacks and improving overall heart health.

Pomegranate Juice And Dates Against Heart Attack

Namely, regular consumption of 12cl of pomegranate juice (the size of a glass of wine), along with 3 raw dates and their seeds, could prevent the accumulation of lipids on the walls of the arteries by up to 28 percent.

Also, it reduces their hardening by 33 percent, and therefore reduce the risk of heart attack.

This research has been published in the journal Food & Function, and comes from an Israeli team that focuses on the consumption of these two powerful fruits and the benefits that they bring.

According to Professor Michael Aviram, pomegranate juice and raw dates are a striking duo that fights against heart disease. Especially because of their richness in phenolic antioxidants.

Among other things, Professor Aviram led the study of the subject in question. He explains that the main ingredients in the pomegranate juice are plant polyphenol antioxidants. These compounds reduce the body’s oxidation process, lowering oxidative stress.

Dates also contain polyphenolic antioxidants that protect the body’s cells from the attacks of free radicals. Also, they help lower the LDL cholesterol, also known as bad cholesterol. According to the Professor, these antioxidants also stimulate the elimination of cholesterol in the arteries.

To conduct their research, the Professor and his team worked in laboratory conditions, on arterial cells of mice that showed high cholesterol levels. They tested a cocktail of pomegranate juice (also including crushed seeds) and dates.

According to the results of this study, published in the journal Food & Function, this duo has reduced the oxidative stress by 33 percent on the walls of the arteries and lowered the arterial cholesterol by 28 percent.

Even without consuming the seeds, Professor Aviram explains that the combination of pomegranate juice and dates is very powerful. And, it is especially effective when the two fruits are consumed together. He further specifies that ideally, you can grind the seeds of both fruits, and consume them in the form of a paste.

The antioxidant properties and health benefits of pomegranate juice have been recognized for many years. Several studies have shown that this fruit can inhibit cancer cells, including research from the Riverside University, California, published in 2010. Also, there are other high fiber foods that help fight LDL cholesterol. Some of those foods are oat flakes, oatmeal, kidney beans, pears, apples, and barley.

Foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids are also a good way to reduce bad cholesterol. Some of those foods are salmon, mackerel, river trout, herring, yellowfin tuna and halibut. Also we can include almonds and nuts rich in fatty polyunsaturated acids.
