Many recipes demand you to use either egg whites or egg yolks, as opposed to entire eggs. Separating the egg yolk from the rest of the egg can be cumbersome and time wasting. The first time I attempted to do it, I ended up with a huge mess and ultimately wasted a lot of eggs.
But, thanks to the creativity of many geniuses, now we have various ways of separating the egg yolk, with many of them being stress-free!
In this method, you need to do the following:
– Break the egg into two halves, as best as you can.
– Use both shell halves as separating cups. The goal is to have one cup containing the egg yolk, and the other cup, the egg white.
– Empty the egg white from the one shell-cup into a bowl. Now, slide the yolk from one shell-cup to the other, paying close attention to leave as little egg white as possible. Each time you transfer the yolk, pour the excess egg white from the shell-cup to the bowl. As you do this separation, be careful not to pierce the yolk with the edges of the eggshells.
– Repeat this step until all that you’re left with is the yolk in one of the shell cups, and the egg white in the bowl.
Egg Yolk Separator
You could also buy an egg separator from the store. It’s designed to hold the yolk in place as the egg white slips right through it into a bowl. It’s easy to use and can be washed safely in a dishwasher. It costs between $3 and $7.
This method involves using your hands as a separating tool. It’s more cumbersome than all methods, but those people with enough practice carry it out with ease. Break the egg into a cup or small bowl. Position one of your hands over another bowl, and transfer the egg in your palm. Hold it, allowing the egg white to slip through your fingers into the second bowl, until all you’re left with in your hand is the egg yolk. Place the yolk in a separate bowl. Repeat the process until you separate all eggs.
The Piercing Method
This method entails using a sharp object, such as a sharp pin, to bore a hole in the eggshell. The hole should be big enough to allow the egg white to slip out of the egg, leaving the yolk behind in the shell.
The trick with this method is ensuring that the size of the hole is just right.
The Plastic Bottle Hack
This is by far the easiest method to use in separating the egg yolk from the egg white. Simply break your eggs into a bowl. Make sure yolks of each egg are intact as you do so. Place the mouth of a small plastic water or juice bottle at an angle over one egg yolk, while pressing the empty bottle. Release your hold and the bottle will suck in the yolk, leaving the egg white behind. With a gentle squeeze, drop the yolk from the bottle into another bowl.
