The Safest Way To Cook Rice, To Reduce The Arsenic Levels

Arsenic is a chemical found freely in the environment. This chemical has been associated with diseases, such as diabetes, development problems, heart disease and cancer. Arsenic can also be found in food substances, and rice is one of the foods with the highest affinity for arsenic absorption.

Scientists say that rice may absorb arsenic from pesticides and other toxins, while growing in the farms. Over time, consuming rice that has not been properly cooked could expose you to dangerous amounts of arsenic, which will most likely have a negative effect on your health.

How To Cook Rice, To Reduce The Arsenic Levels

To help get rid of the arsenic found in rice, there are several proposed methods of cooking. All cooking methods involve the use of large amounts of water, in order to flush out this poisoning chemical and some other toxins.

Here we show you a step-by-step guide on how to cook rice safely.

Step 1: Wash The Rice Under Running Water

Using a strainer, wash the rice under running water, until the water coming out of the string is completely clean and clear. You may also soak the rice overnight, before washing it under the running water.

Step 2: Mix Rice And Water In A Pot

The conventional way of cooking rice is by adding water and rice in a ratio 2:1. However, research has shown that the more water you use when boiling this grain, the more you’ll lower the risk of arsenic poisoning. You don’t have to worry about the water being too much, as once the rice is cooked, you can drain out the excess water. You can use as much as 12 cups of water on only 2 cups of rice.

Step 3: Bring To The Boil And Simmer

Bring the water with rice to boiling point, with the pot covered. Don’t forget to cover the pot, to prevent the evaporation of water, since we need as much water as possible, to help get rid of the arsenic.

Once the water starts boiling, lower the heat to low and allow the rice so slowly simmer until it’s tender.

Step 4: Drain The Rice And Wash It Under Hot Water

Now that your rice is cooked, drain the excess water from it, using the same stringer you used in step one. As you drain it, run hot water over the rice, to further eliminate traces of arsenic.

Step 5: Dry Your Rice

Since you cooked your rice in excess water, it will appear soggy, wet and unappetizing. So, how do you remedy the situation?


Return the rice to the now empty cooking pot. Cover the pot with a kitchen towel and then place the pot’s lid on top of it. Let the rice sit in that pot for about 15 minutes, during which time the kitchen towel will be absorbing most of the excess moisture.

For best results, you can put the pot in a very low heat, to help in the drying process. Take extra care to ensure that the towel doesn’t catch fire, and that the rice doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.

Remember, buying good quality rice will help you reduce the sogginess after cooking through this method.
