Treatments For Helicobacter Pylori, A Bacterium That Causes Heartburn, Bloating And Ulcers

The bacterium Helicobacter pylori has been discovered in 1982, through exhaustive scientific research. It’s one of the most common types of bacteria that live in the digestive system and infect the stomach.

A Helicobacter pylori infection can be the cause of several gastrointestinal diseases, such as heartburn, chronic gastritis, gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, stomach cancer and tumors.

Helicobacter Pylori Transmission And Spread Of Infection

H. pylori is contagious. In general, it’s spread through water and contact with infected foods. Also, there have been cases of infection by direct contact with fecal matter, vomit, or saliva. So, if someone in your household has it, it’s very likely that you’ll get infected too.

Symptoms

How can you tell if you have been infected with H. pylori? It’s easy, you just need to know the symptoms.

The following symptoms indicate that you have an ulcer caused by H. pylori.

  • Burning stomach pain
  • Acidity
  • Burping
  • Bloating
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Nausea and vomiting

If it comes to an ulcer bleed, then you may experience the following:

  • Dark, bloody stool
  • Problems breathing
  • Pale complexion
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Vomit with blood

In some extreme cases, H. pylori may cause cancer. If it comes to this, you may notice the following symptoms:

  • Constant heartburn
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bloating and stomach pain
  • Feeling satiated after a few bites
  • Unexplained weight loss

Make The Right Diagnosis

If you suspect of having a Helicobacter pylori infection, then you need to get tested. First, recognize the symptoms, and then start with a treatment.

You may start with a stool or blood test, or do a urea breath test. You can also ask your doctor to do an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (a diagnostic procedure that checks the upper part of the small intestine and the stomach). Also, there’s the upper gastrointestinal test and a CT scan.

If the presence of H. pylori is confirmed, then you should further check for stomach cancer.

Prevention

If you want to avoid a digestive infection, due to the presence of different types of bacteria in the stomach, we recommend you to increase your hygiene and do the following:

  • Always wash your hands after using the bathroom and before eating.
  • Eat foods prepared in a hygienic way.
  • Don’t eat foods that haven’t been cooked properly.
  • Drink clean water from a reliable source.
  • Avoid foods served by infected people.
  • Find a way to manage your stress.
  • Avoid alcohol and spicy foods, and stop smoking.

Treatment Of Helicobacter Pylori

After making the right diagnosis, you need to continue with treatment. You can treat the infection in 2 different ways: with natural remedies and with medications.

Natural Remedies

The first thing you need to do is change your dietary habits. You should limit your intake of sweet and processed foods, and increase foods that are rich in high-quality protein, fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes and beans, and complex carbohydrates.

Then, you can try the following proven natural remedies:

Cranberry Juice

Drinking one cup of freshly prepared cranberry juice on a daily basis can help you inhibit the growth of H. pylori.

Licorice

This root is a traditional treatment for ulcers. When consumed regularly, it prevents the bacteria from attaching to the lining of the stomach.

Probiotics

These live bacteria are good for the health of your stomach and digestive tract, and may help in the treatment of H. pylori. You can start by eating foods like kefir, Greek yogurt, pickles, sauerkraut, Kombucha, onions, leeks, and asparagus at least two times a week. Also, you can take supplements.

Red Ginseng

The supplements of red ginseng have shown to have anti- Helicobacter pylori properties. But, before you start taking them, consult your doctor.

Manuka Honey

This New Zealand honey has shown to have antibacterial properties that are effective in the treatment of H. pylori. Thus, it’s safe to include it in your everyday diet.

Medical Treatments

If you determine that you have a severe H. pylori infection, then you can also try medical treatments.

Antibiotics

Visit your doctor for a prescription of antibiotics that can help you eliminate the bacterial infection. Most commonly used antibiotics are amoxicillin, tetracycline, metronidazole, and clarithromycin.

Proton Pump Inhibitors

These medications reduce the production of stomach acid, and therefore, create a hostile environment for the bacteria. Usually, they are combined with antibiotics.

Bismuth-Based Therapy

You can also try bismuth subsalicylate, to lower the production of stomach acid. When combined with antibiotics, Pepto-Bismol has shown to be very effective in relieving indigestion, heartburn, gas, and nausea, and in the treatment of H. pylori.
