More often than not, the conversation about healthy food focuses us on the foods we need to avoid, in order to keep cavities, staining and other teeth problems away. In the very same way, just like we have foods that damage the teeth, there are foods that promote the dental health.
The tooth enamel is the toughest substance in the human body. It has a semi-clear appearance and it’s responsible for protecting the teeth from the everyday tear and wear. Also, it protects them from hypersensitivity, i.e. from being too sensitive to extreme temperatures in the foods we eat and drink. More so, enamel keeps off chemicals and food acids that can cause harm to the teeth.
When your enamel begins to erode, you’re more likely to suffer from decay and cavities. You’ll also get overly sensitive to sweets, hot and cold foods that find their way through the cracks in your damaged enamel all the way to your nerves.
Foods For Strong Enamel And Erosion-Free Teeth
1. Dairy Products
Milk, cheese, yogurt, kefir and other dairy products are rich in calcium and phosphorous. Both these minerals help keep your enamel strong, while preventing re-mineralization. Moreover, calcium and phosphorous promote saliva secretion, while saliva helps maintain the pH levels in the mouth, preventing acids from eating away the enamel. Saliva also protects the teeth from bacterial attacks.
2. Animal Protein
Animal proteins generally contain phosphorous, which is key in promoting tooth enamel health. When phosphorous, Vitamin D and calcium work together, you have a guarantee of strong and healthy bones and teeth. So, a little bit of chicken, beef and lamb in your diet, on a regular basis, is ideal. If you’re vegetarian, Tofu is a great alternative for meat. It contains generous amounts of protein, magnesium and calcium, which are all great for the enamel.
Even though we’re advised to avoid sweets for healthy teeth, surprisingly, dark chocolate is actually great for them! Dark chocolate contains cocoa, which in turn is rich in tannin. Tannin is a key ingredient in preventing erosion, as well as for reducing gum inflammation. In addition, dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants that kill the bad bacteria in the mouth.
This crunchy snack contains fiber, which cleans the teeth while chewing. Also, it helps maintain a balanced pH level in the saliva.
Strawberries are rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, both of which are necessary for oral cavity health. But, if you consume them in excessive amounts, the malic acid they contain can be harmful. Hence, moderation in your diet plan is what you need to follow.
Mushrooms are loaded with Vitamin D, which helps the calcium absorption. And, as we already mentioned, calcium is key for strong teeth.
7. Sesame Seeds
Sesame seeds help in keeping away bad bacteria from the mouth. More so, they are rich in calcium and are easy to add to your everyday diet.
8. Cruciferous Vegetables
Cruciferous vegetables, such as kale and broccoli, are rich in vitamin K and other immune-boosting nutrients. Vitamin K has many benefits, including the strengthening of your tooth enamel.
You can also find vitamin K in fermented grains, egg yolk, salami, pasteurized butter and hard cheese.
